A patient at VVF Hospital, Kofan Gayan Zaria |
There’s a lot happening in the desks of MPL, what with the successful quarterly management meeting and Staff Capacity Building workshop with the theme; “Improving Management System,” held recently. The CEO commended it as the best one so far. |
Mentioned still, is the dynamic entrant of our very determined new staff members who promise to keep the lamp of MPL burning with brighter flames.
A radio serial drama program “Gugar Goge” performed in Hausa language, is a highly successful radio serial drama done in collaboration with PMC ( Population Media Center) and Rotarian Action Group on Population and Development to Inform, Educate, change behaviours and Harmful Traditional Practices of which years and years of adherence had tagged the norm. It helped to encourage behavioral change and unleash courage to actualize this change in its numerous northern Nigeria listeners.
Get to know how Gugar Goge changed lives, sought medical attention, reunited a husband and wife and brought out renewed hope in a rigid tradition in the life of Halima and others like her, read on.
Having run it’s 70 episodes serial, “Gugar Goge” gives way to “Ruwan Dare” its sequel (not yet on air at the time of this editorial) slated for Kaduna ,Kano, Katsina and Sokoto states respectively.
Ruwan Dare was designed on the Sabido methodology primarily, with the intent to attract a wider listening audience, shape attitudes, increase awareness of reproductive health so as to increase the number of people who use reproductive health services, with a long term outcome of demand for family planning in northern Nigeria. Unlike “Gugar Goge”, it has 234 episodes, intended to run till 2010.
The ancient city of Kano bubbles to life as big wigs in the communication world, grace her land bringing to bare their massive wealth of knowledge for the betterment of the suffering masses. Find out who these are and their mission in Kano state.
Learn a little about events in development world and what President Bush’s recent proposal of 30 billion dollars support for AIDS Program in developing countries is set to achieve.
Workers strike in any nation is seen as extreme measure taken against a defaulting government of that nation. Could things be done better? How about the principles of dialogue? You may ask the NLC/ government.
Nigeria’s work force has put their foot down on what they call unnecessary hardship meted on its masses through the unwarranted increases of fuel price in the nation by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. An ultimatum was given to the new government of president Yar'adua to put right this wrong or face the consequence of national strike.
Post Election Nigeria: the need to bury the hatchet by all aggrieved, in other to move the nation forward, is what Nigeria needs to do having successfully moved from one democratic government to another, a history made. It behooves stakeholders to show maturity and responsibility on this issue to ensure peace.
We are currently renovating our website where diverse issues and topics regarding development work, research and interventions ,workshops, news and many more would be discussed .We stand on being one of the very best you can possibly log unto for real information. http//www.multisec.org.ng

VVF awareness, radio brings hope and health |
|

Gugar Goge is a 70 episodes radio serial drama in Hausa language developed to address the issues of Obstetric Fistula (Vesico Vaginal Fistula, VVF & Recto Vaginal Fistula, RVF) prevention, treatment and rehabilitation as well as family /reproductive health services utilization and HIV/AIDs with Kaduna and Kano States used as pilot states.
Vesico Vaginal and Recto Vaginal fistula are debilitating complications of obstructed labour, which primarily affect women and girls. During prolonged labour, the baby’s head compresses the vagina against the mother’s pelvic bones, and if the compression continues long enough, the tissues become necrotic, forming an opening between the vagina wall a nd the bladder or the rectum.
It is estimated that at least 2 million women are living with Fistula in sub- Saharan Africa and South Asia, and some 50,000 to 100, 000 women are affected each year.
The project executed by Rotary Action Group on Population and Development in partnership with PMC/Nigeria with Multi Sector Projects (MPL) providing research support to PMC programs in Nigeria.
The radio program was aired in AM service of Radio Kano and in both FM and SW bands of Radio Nigeria- Kaduna, Hausa service.
T he project consists of multi stage research including Formative research, pretest, baseline and monitoring and evaluation.
21 people comprising of producers, script writers and actors of the radio serial drama were trained in the Sabido Methodology used by PMC in the radio serial.
The result of the process monitoring conducted shows as follows:
-
A total of 691 family/reproductive health clients participated in the exercise
-
73 obstetric fistula patients took part in the interviews
-
The radio serial, Gugar Goge, served as primary motivation to seek health care services to 54% of VVF/RVF clients and 33% of family planning/reproductive health (FP/RH) clients.
-
There were 6% and 3% increase in the no of VVF and FP/RH clients respectively who were motivated by Gugar Goge to seek health care services after four months of broadcast.
-
Listenership to the radio serial drama stands at 45% of sample survey which implies that after 4 months of broadcast, the drama attracted appreciable audience and impacted positively on the audience.
Gugar Goge (“Give it to me straight”) addressed many issues through the positive, negative and transitional characters in two main storylines:
- The fistula storyline which addressed themes such as education for girls, delaying marriage and pregnancies, promoting adoption of family planning and reproductive health services including pre and antenatal care for pregnant women, and changing social norms and behaviours about obstetric fistula including its preventable and treatable nature.
- The youth storyline addressed drug and alcohol abuse, risky sexual behaviour with multiple sexual partners and HIV/AIDS
The storylines was patterned after the Sabido Methodology which uses elements of communication and behaviour theories to reinforce specific values.
The radio serial drama has changed the life of some listeners positively by creating awareness on the fistula treatment and rehabilitation services and decrease stigmatization of fistula patients, decrease in early marriage, increase use of maternal /child health care services and increase in girls’ education among others.
The project was jointly supported by Rotary International, the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, and Conservation, Food & Health Foundation.

Gugar Goge reunites man with wife |

Little Halima Abdulsalam hails from Rafin Rogo, a sleepy village located in Ikara Local Government Area in Kaduna State, northern Nigeria. She was born 18 years ago .At the age of 15, her parents got worried that she was getting too old to remain single and therefore decided to source for a husband for her.
At age 16, she had her first delivery with the help of a local female traditional birth attendant. Her husband does not approve of male physicians attending to her and consequently does not allow her to attend ante-natal clinics. It was during Halima’s second delivery that she started leaking feaces and urine due to prolonged, unassisted labour.
Her husband got angry and sent her away on grounds that he became fed up with her health condition. Consequently, Halima became a major source of embarrassment to friends and family as she became stigmatized by community members. She decided to return to her mother and remained there under her care and support.
When asked how she got to Kofan Gayan VVF Specialist Center, she recalled that her uncle listened to Gugar Goge and came to identify the circumstances of Kande ( a VVF patient in the drama characters) to be similar to Halima’s situation. He (the uncle) encouraged Halima and her mother to listen to the drama over the radio. It was in the course of staying tuned during the broadcast time they got to know of the treatment center at Kofan Gayan. Halima underwent a successful operation at the hospital and had since re-united with her husband. |

The Ancient City of Kano hosts Communication experts!!! |
|
| |
As Dissemination Workshop brings in opportunity for discussion of findings. |
|
| |
As part of MPL responsibilities to PMC/Nigeria in the Northern Nigeria project, MPL carried out the formative research to support the Sequel to Gugar Goge i.e. (Ruwan Dare) in shaping the communication programs in four Northwestern States of Nigeria. These are Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Sokoto States.
The formative research was used to gather information about the characteristics, needs, and preferences of the target audience. It was used to design the characters, settings and storylines of the serial drama. It is also used to determine the key values and issues that will be addressed by the serial drama, which is the basis for the theoretical framework, and developing the moral framework.
The formative research analyzed the effects of the culture on reproductive health decisions and sexual behaviour, the positive and negative roles that the mass media and folk media played with regard to the issues of reproductive health, the current situation with regards to availability of relevant medical services throughout the country, prevailing attitudes about safe and quality family planning services and other HIV/AIDS prevention services among the people.
It also delves on information gaps among youths and young adults regarding sexual risks and reproduction.
The report of the formative research was publicly presented by MPL Manager Programs Mr Bello M Adetokunbo at a Dissemination workshop on the 19th of February 2007 at the Center for Democratic Research and Training, of the Bayero University, Mambayya House, Kofar Ruwa, Kano.
The workshop chaired by Professor Munzali Jubril of the Bayero University, Kano was attended by experts in communication and reproductive health among whom are PMC Vice President for International Programs, Kriss Barker, Dr Scott W Connolly, PMC International Programs Manager.
The workshop was also blessed with the presence of members of the PMC Participatory Assessment team led by Arvind Singhal, Professor of Communication Studies, Ohio University, Sarah Hulburt and Radha Vij and PMC consultants from Senegal Dr Ibrahima Sane and Daour Wade. The Country Representative PMC/Nigeria Mr Tony Asangaeneng led the delegation to the ancient city of Kano. |

As NLC strike action ravishes the economy |
|
| |
FG at a crucial meeting with the leaders of the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the bid to halt the strike action, offered to revert the prices of kerosene and diesel to the old rates of N60 and N70 respectively.
It also agreed to suspend the 100 percent increase in Valued Added Tax (VAT) and to remove N5 from the recent N10 jack up in the price of fuel. Other “concessions” from the government to the worker’s leaders were, agreement to effect the 15 percent increase in worker’s salaries from January this year while the labor leaders were urged to go to the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) to table their grievances over the sale of refineries with a view of ironing out Labor’s differences with the privatization agency on the sale.
Prior to the industrial action embarked by the NLC, the Nigerian populace had been reduced to stinging poverty due to the recent increase in petroleum products by the erstwhile president Olusegun Obasanjo. Transportation fares skyrocketed; prices of food went overboard not to mention the scarcity of the products themselves, filling stations were closed to motorists due to tanker drivers fighting for their own rights had embarked on an earlier strike action.
Are things at a standstill now or did labor make good their threat?
The situation is not yet settled as labor on the midnight of the 19th June 2007 embarked on the industrial action. Workers went summarily on strike and buck passing began between FG and NLC.
The point is not whether NLC’ s actions are “political” in nature and not a “sincere” front for the plight of the masses, it is that someone albeit group of persons, are raising their heads up to injustices that don’t seem to disengage themselves from the polity.
NLC strong man Abduwaheed Omar may have acted hastily, however, but the sooner a dress is ironed, the quicker its wearer may wear it and be unto other important matters.
Gradually, we see costs of living becoming slimly bearable but nothing ever goes back to normal as should in a normal case. Meanwhile, poverty supremely lingers on in the wake of selfish tendencies, greed, deceit, covetousness and what have you.
Is it that the inability to rule wisely, selflessly with knowledge that tomorrow and today often count but considered an undue nightmare by those in the helms of affairs or shall we simply state that by African standards, oppression by ignorant choice, has become the norm?
In my opinion, President Umaru Yar' Adua should be given a chance to perform. Thus causing us to wait and see if by the end of his four year tenure, his electoral manifesto would have been religiously implemented (NLC take note). However, the way Mr. President resolves pending issues, will show the stuff he is made of; the “stooge” or the ultimate “servant” Nigeria desperately needs today. After all, uneasy lies the head that bears Nigeria’s burdens (crown) after the departure of former “dynamo” president, chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
Cheers!

US President Extends Relief (PEPFAR) |
| |
The U S President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has brought critically needed services to millions of people in the developing world. President Bush recently proposed $30 billion U S investment into AIDS programs in developing countries.
Extending PEPFAR for five more years and doubling its initial $15 billion is a dramatic step toward improving the health and well being of some of the world’s most vulnerable population.
PEPFAR program has benefited the world enormously by averting new HIV infections, bringing life-saving antiretroviral treatment to those who are HIV-positive, caring for these persons and their families, and preventing opportunistic infections, such as tuberculosis and malaria.
The PEPFAR program has given succor to millions of HIV positive patients, with anti-retroviral treatment and delivered innovative services for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS.
Nigeria is one of the PEPFAR's 15 focus countries which is said to represent approximately 50 percent HIV infections world wide.
It is estimated that the new phase of the project will support treatment for 2.5 million people of more than 12 million new infections, and provide care for more than 12 million infected and affected people, including 5 million orphaned and vulnerable children.
According to the National Coordinator HIV/AIDS at the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Annette Akinsete, "with the support of PEPFAR, 50 percent of those infected would have access to quality treatment".
She said that although the prevalence rate of HIV infection had reduced to 4.4 percent, an estimated 3 million Nigerians still live with the virus, while 540,000 of the number are in need of treatment. |
