Obstacle to behavior change in the face of HIV/AIDS infections in Nigeria |
|
Coverage: Nationwide
Project Brief: A survey of obstacle to behavior change in the face of HIV/AIDS infections and preventive Behavior Change Communications programs in Nigeria. The study reveals that denials about the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria have diminished. However, a number of attitudinal barriers hampered significant change in behaviors. A combination of disbelief, stigmatization, cure –all claims of herbal remedies, popularity and massive subscription to Christian & Islamic doctrines of faith/divine health and healing were among identified barriers to behavior change. 2. Behavior Change Communications Program for Avoidance of HIV / AIDS Infection |
 |
|
| |
Coverage: Nationwide
In-Country Cost Support: Federal Government of Nigeria.
Implementing Agencies: Multi Sector Projects (MPL) and Population Media Center (PMC), USA.
Project Brief: The program which is under development, is a social purpose serial drama built around the primary principle of social learning that humans learn much of their behavior from role models, thus, as plots and sub- plots unfold over many months, “good” and “bad” role models are introduced through whom audience members gradually learn the consequences of actions they take or don’t take in their family and sexual lives.
To monitor how audience members interpret roles in the story line, researchers will listen to the program with selected families who agree to listen to the broadcast. Focus groups with these listening groups would enable the monitoring team to examine how audience members interpret roles and ascertain whether messages in the play are interpreted according to design, this would enable the production team to adjust the roles in the play.
Research on the effectiveness of Sabido methodology for Behavior Change Communication (BCC) in Mexico, India, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia etc. reveal that this approach is unique and effective in bringing about population wide changes in behavior with regards to reproductive health and social development goals.
